- WILLKOMMEN/WELCOME
Dear Students!
Welcome to the courses of the Chair of General and Analytical Chemistry. In order to make your studies easier, we have created e-learning courses for most courses, which we are constantly adding to and improving. With this in mind, we will do our best to accompany you on your way, if you follow suit, chemistry, despite all possible reservations, might even become one of your favorite subjects!
Good chemical luck, Thomas Prohaska and your team of supervisors!

- Exercise 1: Periodic table
WELCOME to the first exercise of the MINT Chemistry course Periodic Table
program items:
construct your own periodic table
calculate relevant examples on blackboard and working in groups
Feedbacker quiz
we work for 2 x 45 minutes in groups of 4-5 persons
learning goals exercise 1
- determine the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus and the number of electrons
- understand and calculate isotope ratios
- determine group, determine valence electrons, identify family of elements
- determine period and main shell from periodic table
refine your skills and have fun
These problems will be solved in class
This Test must be completed by all students who were not present at exercise 1!
Here are further examples on periodic system and atomic structure, assessment level.
- Exercise 2: Simple ions, molar mass
program items:- calculate examples on blackboard and within groups
- feedbacker quiz
You will be working in groups of 4-5 people.
Leaning goals for exercise 2
- reaction equations from atom to ion
- construct and name simple ionic substances
- recognize covalent bonding from Lewis structures
- distinguish ionic, metallic, covalent bonds
- simple molecular ions
- (the mole)
- calculate molar masses
Please find simple models as explanation for the different bonding types.
Train how to name chemical compounds, German only.
Training to find the correct coefficients for chemical compounds, German only.
This examples will be worked on during class.
This Test must be completed by all students who were not present at exercise 2!
Please find further exam grade examples, without solutions
- Exercise 3 & 4: Concentrations
In exercise 3 & 4 you will learn to calculate concentrations and convert them to different measures.
Group work of 4-5 students is encouraged.
learning goals for lessons 3 and 4
- molar concentration
- molality
- weight fractions
- molar fraction
- dilutions
